las vegas: pickled pepper kids sale!

There's another kids consignment sale here in Henderson/Las Vegas. It's called Pickled Pepper Kids! Go here to read more! It's open to the public from October 8th-10th! It's a great place to find baby/kids stuff at a low price! Or if you have stuff you want to sell, you can do that too and you'll make 2/3 profit! Here's the little blurb one of the organizers sent me about it:

Have you heard of Pickled Peppers Kids consignment sales? This is a great way to stretch your dollar. You know all those things you bought for your kids that they played with once and then forgot about? What about that stuff that they outgrew in a matter of weeks?

If you've been to a seasonal consignment sale for children before, then you know how it works. There are tons of these in the Eastern states, and we finally have one here in Vegas. Basically, you tag your items (you choose the price), drop them off at the sale location, and after the sale is over, PPK sends you a check for 2/3 of the selling price of your items. This is tons more than consignment stores pay and WAY easier than selling things one at a time on Craigslist or ebay. The sale organizers do all the advertising so that there will be plenty of shoppers to buy your things.

The best perk of consigning is that you get to shop early. For new moms, they have swings, infant seats, strollers, beds, all kinds of maternity clothes and nursing supplies and more. For older kids, there are bikes, sandboxes, play equipment, toys, games, dvd's, and tons of clothes.

This is the 5th event Pickled Peppers Kids has done, and it gets bigger each time. This time they expect to have over 100 consignors.
There is still plenty of time to register as a consignor for their current event, which runs from October 5th-10th. You won't want to miss this.

"Pickled Peppers Kids Consignment sale is truly THE BEST!! I have been going to their sales for a couple years now and each time is bigger and better than the one before! It's the best of both worlds, you can make some extra cash on your gently used children's items that are just taking up space and ALSO have the opportunity to buy SO MANY quality children's products that are just like new! And, the brave souls that run the show, Lori, Rachel and Christina, still make it fun to be a volunteer! I save my money every season so I can purchase a large portion of my daughter's wardrobe at this sale...can't wait for this year."

guest post: thrift store shopping!

Thanks to my friend, Christina, for this great post on Thrift Store shopping! It gives me hope that thrift stores aren't as scary as they seem! Christina is the wife and mom to one little girl, with another on the way! She blogs over at The Nifty Thrifty Homemaker and always has great posts on frugal living, budgeting, and just being a better homemaker in general! Right now she has a great post about frugal fall decorating that anyone needing inspiration should read!

Thrift stores are my guilty pleasure. I love thrift store shopping, and it has become more popular since the economy took a turn for the worst. When I walk into a thrift store, I see it almost as a game: what can I find for a great deal? The truth is, there are great deals to be had, so long as you're looking in the right places.

Don't judge a store by the outside. When I was living in Idaho, I drove by a thrift store near my house, and decided to check it out, even though it was a hole-in-the-wall sort of place. I ended up becoming well-acquainted with the women who ran it. It looked a bit musty, but it wasn't dirty, and they had great merchandise. All the proceeds went to support local animal shelters, which was a plus.

Out with the old, in with the new. A few times a year, clean out your closets. Anything you haven't worn (or won't wear), throw in a bag to be donated. I find it can be hard, but you really need to be honest with yourself about what you will actually wear. It helps me to know that my clothes will be used by someone else instead of being thrown out. Look for thrift stores that donate at least some of their proceeds to charity. You will also be able to get a tax deduction.

Visit often. Merchandise is constantly changing at thrift stores. Don't give up if you go once and don't find anything you like. Visit in a couple weeks, and it'll be like visiting a whole new store.

Don't buy something just because it's a great deal. I am guilty of this one. I have stood there, with a great deal in front of me, racking my brain trying to find someone who could benefit from it. ("Do I have someone to give this to?") If you don't need it, don't buy it. Even if it is cheap.

Here are some of my favorite buys at thrift stores:

Clothes. My daughter has been almost completely clothed in hand-me-downs and thrift store purchases. (And trust me, she is a very well-dressed toddler.) Look for popular brands such as Gymboree, The Children's Place, and Old Navy. Check for holes, loose threads, and missing buttons. Don't be afraid to ask for a discount. Many thrift stores have been marking up their prices just because something is name-brand, even though there's a stain on it. If you can fix a loose button or think you can get a stain out, great! If not, leave it. Also, don't forget to look for clothing for yourself. You'd be surprised what you can find. I've bought clothes from Gap, American Eagle, Ann Taylor, and other quality brands, for less than $5 at thrift stores.

Books. I love to read, so I always browse the books. I also have great luck finding children's books and cookbooks. Expect to pay between .50 and $3 per book.

Housewares. I bought a brand-new dish strainer today for .50 cents. (It still had the plastic wrap on it!) Thrift stores are full of dishes, cups, silverware, kitchen utensils, pots, pans, etc. I've spotted Pampered Chef products several times.

Board Games. My husband and I love board games, but they are a bit pricey, even when they go on sale. If you find one you like at a thrift store, open it up and see if the directions and parts list is inside. Then you can count the parts and find out if it's missing anything. If it is, you have an alternative. Hasbro sells replacement parts to games on their website, even for non-Hasbro games. For a few bucks, your game can be good as new.

Toys. You can really hit the jackpot when searching for toys. If you buy any, make sure to clean them with a kid-safe solution (such as vinegar and water) before playing with them. The great thing about buying toys at thrift stores is that if your child stops playing with it after a couple weeks, you don't feel guilty, because you didn't spend a lot of money on it.

Home Decor. The other day, I was sitting in my living room when I realized the entire room was decorated with super clearance deals / thrift store finds / yard sale finds. I'll have to post a photo because my living room actually looks great, and no one would ever guess that I spent so little to decorate it. You can find picture frames, framed art, lamps, baskets, bookends, and all sorts of cool things.

Do you guys shop at Thrift Stores? What have been your experiences? What are your favorite things to look for?

guest posts

While I work on getting back into the groove of things, I was wondering if anyone would like to do a guest post? Here's a list of topic suggestions, though I'm open to other ideas too:

  • working at home
  • time management and budget shopping
  • cooking from scratch
  • stockpiling

Those are just a few ideas. Like I said, it can be about other things, it just has to be somehow related to frugality! Email me if you're interested--tosaveapenny@yahoo.com

news

Yeah. We got some more news today. We had a third ultrasound today (I'm almost 12 weeks). I was hoping to find out the gender (yeah I know it's early...but hey, a girl can hope!) but the doctor found something else.

Two.

Babies.

We're having TWINS! Identical twins to be exact!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

So maybe that's why I've been feeling so weird?! Anyway--just wanted to share the news!

consumer's corner!

Welcome to this week's edition of Consumer's Corner! Here is where we write companies and tell them what we think of their products (usually good stuff) and/or ask for coupons. A lot of times companies will send coupons because they appreciate the feedback! Be sure to click on the label "Consumer's Corner" at the bottom to see the whole list of posts I've done on this!

This week I only received three .50/1 Welch's product coupons! What did you guys get?

i need help!

So lately, I've been having trouble finding good deals, hence the lack of posts. I see a lot of deals around, but they just don't seem good enough to put up. So. If you come across a deal that looks great, would you email me (tosaveapenny@yahoo.com)? Maybe it's just me (actually I'm sure it's just me!) and maybe you guys can help me find the best stuff!

If you email me and I post your deal, I'll give you credit (and if you have a blog post about the deal, I'll link to that too)!

Thanks friends!
